It’s very simple...
Generalmente, usiamo ‘to watch’ quando l'oggetto è in movimento, mentre usiamo ‘to look at’ quando ciò che stiamo guardando è fermo.
Generally, we use ‘to watch’ when the thing is in motion whereas we use ‘to look at’ when what we’re looking at is stationary.
1. He ...... tv. / Lui guarda la tv.
Answer/Risposta:
is watching – perché l'immagine su una tv si muove (gerundio perché succede ora / ‘is watching’ – because the image on the tv is moving – gerund because it’s happening now).
2. ..... that bird sitting on a branch. / Guarda quell'uccello seduto sul ramo.
Answer/Risposta:
‘look at’ perché l’uccello non si muove. È seduto. / ‘Look at’ because the bird isn’t moving. It’s sitting.
3. I’ve been ...... the birds flying overhead. / Guardo gli uccelli che volano sopra la mia testa.
Answer/Risposta:
‘watching’ perché gli uccelli si muovono, volano. / ‘watching’ because the birds are moving, they are flying.
4. My cat is ......... the washing going round in the washing machine. / Il mio gatto guarda il bucato che gira nella lavatrice.
Answer/Risposta:
‘watching’ perché il bucato si muove (gira) / ‘watching’ because the washing is moving (going round).
5. ....... that washing machine. It’s really expensive! / Guarda quella lavatrice. È davvero costosa!
Answer/Risposta:
‘look at’ perché la lavatrice non si muove / ‘look at’ because the washing machine isn’t moving.
6. He .......... his sister play tennis. / Lui guarda sua sorella giocare a tennis.
Answer/Risposta:
‘is watching’ perché quando si fa uno sport, si muove. / ‘is watching’ because you move when you play a sport.
7. Don’t .......... the moon. You could turn into a werewolf! / Non guardare la luna. Potresti trasformarti in un lupo mannaro!
Answer/Risposta:
Look at’ perché la luna non si muove. È fermo nel cielo. / ‘Look at’ because the moon isn’t moving. It’s still in the sky.
