Learners of English tell us time and time again that the pronunciation is the hardest part of the English language.

Unlike Italian, English is not a phonetic language, it is very often not pronounced as it’s spelled. Even native English school children have to learn spelling during their first years at school.
A differenza dell’italiano, l’inglese non è una lingua fonetica, quindi molto spesso non viene pronunciato come si scrive. Persino i bambini madrelingua inglesi devono imparare l’ortografia durante i primi anni di scuola.

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet with a total of 44 sounds (or phonemes).  The 21 consonants have 24 consonant sounds (which isn’t so bad) but the 5 vowels have 20 sounds which can take time to master as the sound can apply to more than one vowel.  The sounds can be used or both single letters, or a combination of letters.

L’alfabeto inglese è composto da 26 lettere, con un totale di 44 suoni (o fonemi). Le 21 consonanti hanno 24 suoni consonantici, (il che non è poi così male), ma le 5 vocali hanno 20 suoni, il che può richiedere tempo per essere padroneggiato, poiché il suono può essere applicato a più di una vocale. I suoni possono essere usati sia come singole lettere, sia come combinazioni di lettere.

Below find 7 of the vowel sounds with common English example words.  These sounds mainly apply to the English letter ‘O’, however, sometimes it’s the same sound for words without the letter ‘O’.
